Our Synagogue — Mount Zion
Plan a walking tour/scavenger hunt of the building to find Hebrew words.
Children wonder and discover; you facilitate more than you lecture.
- What spaces do we use for prayer at Mount Zion?
- What spaces do we use for learning and gathering?
- Where do you see Hebrew at Mount Zion?
This unit makes Mount Zion the child’s own. A scavenger hunt for Hebrew words and sacred spaces builds belonging and observation.
- Sanctuary / chapel
- Bimah — prayer platform
- Aron kodesh — ark
- “Why be quiet in the sanctuary?”
- It’s a special space for prayer; we show it respect, like a library or a deep-breath room.
- Children identify Mount Zion’s spaces and their uses.
- Children spot Hebrew around the building and learn space expectations.
A tangible ‘this is my place’ experience — celebrate that every child belongs in every space.
Folktale. Each Brick a Blessing (Folklore) — a tale that every brick of a house of prayer holds the good wishes of those who built it.
Changemaker. Our gabbai and caretaker — the two people who know where everything in this building is kept, and the reason anything works on a Saturday morning.
How does each space in our building help us pray, learn, or gather — and why?
“We explored Mount Zion and found Hebrew words! Ask your child to give you a tour next time you’re here.”
