Shomrei Adamah — Caretakers of the Earth
Tu BiSh’vat • A Prayer for the Earth (Naamah) • Tu BiSh’vat Seder
Hold a simple Tu BiSh’vat seder with fruits and juices.
Children wonder and discover; you facilitate more than you lecture.
- Why is it important to take care of the Earth?
- How can we celebrate the Earth?
- How can we protect it?
Shomrei adamah means ‘guardians of the earth.’ Tu BiSh’vat, the trees’ birthday, is our earth holiday. Naamah, Noah’s wife, saved the seeds of every plant.
- Shomrei adamah — earth caretakers
- Etz — tree
- Tu BiSh’vat — New Year of Trees
- “Why care for the Earth?”
- It’s God’s creation and our only home; the Torah asks us to protect it.
- Children understand caring for creation as a Jewish value.
- Children take a concrete earth-care action.
Tie to children’s real habits (recycling, saving water) so action is accessible to all.
Folktale. Honi Plants a Carob Tree (Talmudic) — we plant trees for children we will never meet.
Changemaker. Simcha Blass — noticed one tree growing far better than its neighbours with no water in sight, dug down, and found a pipe leaking one drop at a time. He turned that into a way of growing food in a desert.
What would you do to take care of the earth this week?
“We held a Tu BiSh’vat seder! Try at home: plant something or commit to one earth-care habit together.”
